Addition Concepts

Addition is the process of adding two or more numbers together.

Sample problem 1:

At 10 o'clock one Saturday morning,
there were 3 children and one man playing in the park.
  Half an hour later,
2 more girls came to play at that park.

How many children were at the park by that time?

Solution:
There are 3 children and 2 children at the park to make 5 children in all.

In mathematical form, we write the above statement as:
   3 children + 2 children = 5 children,
         or
    3 + 2 = 5

Sample problem 2:
This morning, mother just went to the market and bought 6 apples.
In the afternoon, uncle James came to visit us and brought a bag of apples.
There are 8 apples inside that bag,
How many apples do we have now?

Apples that mother bought + Apples from uncle James

+
=
  6 + 8 = 14
Now, we have 14 apples altogether.

Addends are any number that can be added to another number.
Sum is the result quantity when you add together two or more numbers.

In the first problem, 3 and 2 are the addends, and 5 is the sum.

In the second problem, the addends are 6 and 8, and the sum is 14.
