Addition is the process of adding two or more numbers together.
Sample problem 1:
| |
At 10 o'clock one Saturday morning,
there were 3 children and one man playing in the park.
|
|
Half an hour later, 2 more girls came to play at that park. |
| |
 |
|

|
| |
How many children were at the park by that time? |
|
|
Solution:
| |
There are 3 children and 2 children at the park to make
5 children in all.
In mathematical form, we write the above statement as:
3 children + 2 children =
5 children,
or
3 + 2 = 5 |
Sample problem 2:
|
This morning, mother just went to the market and bought
6 apples.
In the afternoon, uncle James came to visit us and brought a bag of
apples.
There are
8 apples inside that bag,
How many apples do we have now?
|
|
Apples that mother bought |
+ |
Apples from uncle James |
| |
|
|
|
|
+ |
|
= |
|
| |
6 |
+ |
8 |
= |
14 |
| |
Now, we have 14 apples altogether. |
Addends are any number that can be added to another number.
Sum is the result quantity when you add together two or more numbers.
In the first problem, 3 and 2 are the
addends, and 5 is the sum.
In the second problem, the addends are 6
and 8, and the sum
is 14.
