Clock Reading

There are two types of commonly used clocks: Analog Clocks and Digital Clocks.

Analog Clock

Analog clocks have numbers from 1 to 12 that are arranged in order on its face so that the number 12 is at the top or North, 6 is at the bottom or South, and all the other numbers are spread equally in between those two numbers.

An analog clock also has a short hand that tells the hour and a long hand that tells the minutes.
When the short or hour hand points to 5 and the long or minute hand points to 12, we then know it is 5 o'clock or 5:00.

Since there are 60 minutes in an hour, the long or minute hand will move 60 times in 60 minutes to go all the way around the clock starting from 12 to 12 passing the numbers 1 through 11 in between. During that time the short or hour hand will move from one number to the next. After that, 1 hour has passed.

It takes 5 minutes for the long or minutes hand to move from one number to the next, such as from 1 to 2, or 6 to 7.
When the minute hand is pointing to the 6 and the hour hand is in between the 5 and the 6, the time is five-thirty or 5:30, which means that it is 30 minutes after 5 o'clock.
Since 30 minutes is half of 60 minutes or 1 hour, then 5:30 is sometimes called half past five.
Using the same reasoning, since 15 minutes is a quarter of an hour, then 5:15 is also called quarter past 5.
5:45 is also sometimes called quarter to six.

Digital Clock

Digital clock displays time using numbers in the format of hh:mm, where h is the hours and mm is the two digit minutes.

8:00  means   8 hours and 0 minutes or 8 o'clock.
6:02  means   6 hours and 2 minutes.
12:25 means 12 hours and 25 minutes.

Most digital clocks have AM and PM after the time.
AM (Ante Meridium) is the time from Midnight until right before Noon.
For example:
   12:00 AM is midnight
5:30 AM is five-thirty in the morning.

PM
(Post Meridium) is the time from Noon until right before Midnight.
For example:
   12:00 PM is noon.
11:59 PM is one minute before midnight.

Sometimes people use the 24 hour format or military format on digital clocks rather than the AM and PM or 12 hour format.
In 24 hour format,
    1:00 PM = 13:00 and
   11:00 PM = 23:00
