According to the Can Manufacturers Institute, Americans use 200 million tin cans every day. In 1809, a French cook and inventor, Nicolas Appert won a contest sponsored by Napoleon to create a container to keep food fresh; Mr. Appert's first try used glass containers sealed with wax. Later in 1818, Briton Peter Durand developed a tin-lined steel can to hold food. The tin can admirably protect and preserve its contents. In the old days, the local bakery sold bread in loaves. But Otto Frederick Rohwedder, an inventor changed the history by creating the presliced-loaf and sealed-bag process in 1928. A couple years later, Wonder Bread made presliced bread a rage. Briton Charles Strite invented the timed, pop-up toaster in 1919. Toastmaster introduced the beautiful appliance 10 years later.
